DAVID L. KAPLAN, MD
Dr. David L. Kaplan is a regionally and nationally recognized master clinician in dermatology. He lectures locally as well as nationally, publishes regularly in peer-reviewed medical publications, and has appeared numerous times on television and radio. He holds professorships at UMKC School of Medicine and University of Kansas School of Medicine, and has mentored students from numerous physician assistant and nurse practitioner graduate programs. Dr. Kaplan provides care for all ages, from newborn to the elderly. Having been trained and board certified in both dermatology and internal medicine, Dr. Kaplan is able to look beyond the surface of most dermatologic conditions to identify underlying cause. While trained as a general dermatologist, Dr. Kaplan enjoys the challenge of tackling complex medical dermatology, solving difficult to diagnose or difficult to manage skin conditions (see below for examples). Dr. Kaplan is a recognized expert in dermatology; he writes a monthly feature in a national medical publication with 250,000 subscribing primary care physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. He has authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications, provided over 50 radio and television interviews and appearances, including National Public Radio twice and has been quoted in newspapers across the country.
He completed his undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis. He then obtained a Masters Degree in Microbiology from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. From there, Dr. Kaplan received his medical degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He went on to complete a full internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. He returned to North Carolina upon receiving a Dermatology Foundation research fellowship in dermatopharmacology at Duke University Medical Center Division of Dermatology. Dr. Kaplan then completed his dermatology residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. Dr. Kaplan is board certified in both dermatology and internal medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Katie Duke, NP-C, MS
Katie Duke is a board certified nurse practitioner who began working in dermatology in 2006. She obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Kansas, and is currently licensed to practice in Kansas and Missouri.
She practiced early in her career with Dr. Kaplan prior to moving to California and starting a family. While in California, Katie gained additional clinical experience working at a joint dermatology and plastic surgery practice. Upon relocating with her family back to her hometown of Kansas City, she worked for over 5 years at a dermatology practice in Lee’s Summit, MO.
Katie resides in Prairie Village, KS, with her husband and three children. She rejoined Adult & Pediatric Dermatology in 2021 and she is committed to providing the highest level of care for patients.
Megan Cummings, PA-C
Megan Cummings is a board-certified Physician Assistant with over 10 years of clinical experience. After graduating from The University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology she worked with Dr. Elizabeth Spenceri, MD, for two years, gaining experience as a dermatology Medical Assistant and Histotechnician during Mohs surgeries. Megan attended PA school at The University of Florida College of Medicine, one of the top-ranked PA programs in the country.
Megan recently returned to the Kansas City area after practicing Dermatology in McKinney, Texas. While there, she earned her Diplomate Fellowship through the Society of Dermatology of Physician Assistants, a premier training
program for Dermatology PA’s.
Megan has special interests in skin cancer prevention, aesthetic dermatology, and making her patients feel their best when it comes to skin health.
Megan is happy to call the Kansas City area home again and has been enjoying trying new restaurants with her husband and chasing after her two young boys on all the outdoor trails.
