Do you need a boost to your current skin regimen? Many of us spend more time, money, and effort than necessary on skincare products that are ineffective for skin conditions like acne, age spots, and wrinkles. Chemical peels and laser treatments are some of the most effective ways to maintain and improve skin health and boost your skin care routine. These two skin resurfacing procedures are used to make the skin smooth by removing old skin cells and promoting the growth of new ones.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use gentle acidic solutions of various strengths to remove the outer layer of skin and reveal the new skin beneath. Most of these acids are derived from natural sources. Mild peels are more superficial, brightening the skin gently. More powerful peels use acids such as TCA and glycolic acid to penetrate deep into the skin, removing damaged skin cells, unclogging pores, smoothing scar tissue, and lightening dark areas. With careful selection and application of peels, they are safe and effective for all skin types.
Laser Treatment
Laser resurfacing procedure, as the name indicates, uses beams of light to get into the inner layer of the skin. This precise, and gentle treatment focuses on one layer at a time. Two categories of laser treatments are popular in the cosmetic market – ablative and non-ablative lasers. In ablative laser resurfacing, CO2 or Erbium is commonly used to more aggressively remodel the skin. Non-ablative laser procedures are more mild on the skin and use broad-spectrum light to treat skin concerns including uneven skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles.
Not everyone is a good candidate for laser treatment. The following conditions are often contraindicated with laser treatments:
- Having skin infections in and around the area to be treated
- Requiring to be under the sun after treatment
- Having a history of hypertrophic or raised scars
- Don’t have enough time for normal recovery as recommended
For many, laser procedures are a good option for shallow and deeper scars left from acne and other skin conditions. IPL (Intense Pulse Light), for instance, helps smooth skin damage caused by UV sun rays, freckles, spider veins, rosacea, wrinkles, and treat unwanted body hair. Your dermatologist is the one who will ultimately decide which procedure is right for your skin.
